Science Week

Friday 1st March 2019

Dear parents/carers,

Science Week 2019

As you will have seen from our previous requests for help, we have a Science Week planned for the third week of this term. The purpose of the week is to raise the profile of the subject and to inspire the children through fun and engaging practical activities. All the activities will have a specific STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning purpose, with an aim to develop the children’s investigation skills. During the week they will have the opportunity to develop a range of scientific skills such as testing a hypothesis, planning a ‘fair test’, making a prediction, collating the results of their investigation, and drawing a conclusion based on the results. We will also be taking this opportunity to teach other subjects through science, such as English, maths, ICT, art and DT.

The theme for our Science Week is ‘Exploration and Discovery’, encouraging young people to think about everyday discoveries and how they affect their lives by exploring science in the world all around us; from their home and schools, to their local area and wider environment. It is also a chance for the children to consider how exploration and discovery can have a positive impact on the future. There will be a different focus each day, as follows:

  • Monday – exploring our homes
  • Tuesday – exploring the outdoors
  • Wednesday – exploring our world
  • Thursday and Friday – exploring space

There will be a whole school homework and also, to inspire and enrich the week for the children, we have a range of visitors who will be presenting to the children on a variety of subjects (such as polar exploration, Forest Schools work and a space wonderdome). We are very thankful to FOLA who are very kindly funding the majority of these enrichment activities.

Please note that, on Monday (Y3 and Y5) or Tuesday (Y4 and Y6), your child will take part in a Forest Schools session. These activities will go ahead even in cold or wet weather. We will remind children about appropriate clothing before their session – wet weather gear, jumpers, gloves and wellies/old shoes are a must. We would also like the children to bring a mug for hot chocolate.

We are really looking forward to our exciting week of exploration and discovery!

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely,

The Science Team
