Y5 Viking Day – Thursday 13th February 2020
Dear Parents / Carers
As part of our topic on The Vikings, we have arranged a special day of activities on Thursday 13th February. These activities will take place in school, during the normal school day, and will be led by members of the year 5 teaching team.
The children have really enjoyed this topic so far and we hope that this special day helps them to develop an even greater understanding of what life might have been like in this country, at the time of the early Viking invasions. We would really like all the children to come dressed up as a Viking themed character for the day (see 2nd document attachment on the email for some simple costume suggestions).
One of the activities will be to make a Viking shield. To prepare for this, we would like the children to cut out a circle of thick, strong cardboard with their name on, about 40cm in diameter, and bring into school by Friday 7th February at the latest. They will also need small off-cuts from the cardboard to decorate their shields so they should bring those too. Please do not add anything to this circle of cardboard yet: we will be adding all the decorative parts to the shield (including making the boss, the strong centre part) and adding a handle at school. We will make the shields at the beginning of the week and then, on Viking Day, we will paint the shields in colours for each tribe (or class) so please do not paint it at home.
We don’t require help from parents during this day but we do welcome any parents/carers who would like to come in and share all or part of the day with their child and see what we have been learning. Please follow the link on the email to complete the short online form to let us know if you will be joining us.
