Welcome to Lydgate Junior School.

We aim to ensure that all children receive a high quality, enjoyable and exciting education.

We feel that our school is a true reflection of the community we serve. Lydgate children are well motivated and come from a range of social and cultural backgrounds. Within the school community we appreciate the richness of experience that the children bring to school. This enhances the learning experiences of everyone and it also gives all pupils the opportunity to develop respect and tolerance for each other by working and playing together. Welcome to Year 3!

The Y3 teachers are Mrs Dutton & Mrs de Brouwer (3D/deB), Mrs Holden (3SH), Mrs Noble & Mrs Finney (3N/R) and Miss Wall (3AW). We have several Teaching Assistants who work with Y3 children at different times through the week: Mr Jenkinson, Mrs Proctor, Mrs Hill, Mrs Allen, Mrs Dawes and Mr Gartrell.

We will use this blog to keep you up-to-date with all the exciting things that we do in Year 3, share some of the things that the children learn and show you some of their fantastic work. We hope you enjoy reading it!

Welcome to the Y4 blog. 

The Y4 team consists of the following teachers: Mrs Purdom in Y4JP, Mrs Smith and Mrs Smith (yes, that's right) in Y4SS, Mrs Wymer in Y4CW and Ms Reasbeck and Mrs Drury in Y4RD. The children are also supported by our teaching assistants: Mrs Proctor, Mrs Cooper, Mrs Hornsey, Mr Jenkinson and Mrs Wolff. We have help from Mrs Farrell, Miss Lee and Mrs Grimsley too and some of the children are lucky enough to spend time in The Hub with Mrs Allen. What a team!

We know that the question children are mostly asked when they arrive home is 'What did you do today?' The response is often 'nothing'! Well, here is where you can find out what 'nothing' looks like. Welcome to the Year 5 Blog page.

The Year 5 teaching team includes our class teachers, Mrs Loosley (5NL), Mrs Rougvie and Mrs Jones (5RJ), Mrs Webb and Mrs Ridsdale (5WR) and Miss Cunningham (5EC).  Many children are supported by Mrs Hill, Mr Swain and Ms Kania (the Year 5 Teaching Assistants) who work with children across the 4 classes. Our Year 5 teaching team aims to create a stimulating learning environment that is safe, happy, exciting and challenging, where each pupil is encouraged to achieve their full potential.

As a parent or carer, you play a massively important role in your child's development and we'd love to work closely with you. Please feel free to make an appointment to see us if you want to discuss your child's attitude to learning, their progress, attainment or anything else that might be on your mind. We'd also love to hear from you if you have any skills that we could use to make our Year 5 curriculum even more exciting. Are you an avid reader, a talented sportsman, a budding artist, a mad scientist or a natural mathematician? Would you be willing to listen to children read on a regular basis? If so, please contact your child’s class teacher. Similarly, if you have a good idea, a resource, a 'contact' or any other way of supporting our learning in year 5, please let us know.

We are working very hard to ensure your child has a successful year 5, please help us with this by ensuring your child completes and returns any homework they are given each week. If there are any issues regarding homework or your child finds a particular piece of homework challenging, then please do not hesitate to come and speak to us. In order to help improve your child’s reading skills, increase their vocabulary and develop their comprehension skills, we also ask that you listen to your child read and ask them questions to ensure they have understood what they have read.

Flight 619 Days 1-5

This week, our Year 6 children have been stranded on a deserted island. They were flying solo, when they crash landed on an island. 

It was a small plane, with only one passenger...

Their first job was to plot the island and work out the area and perimeter...

If you are wondering what they island looks like...

The plan crashing even made the news!

In order to stay safe, they had to build a shelter...

So that they didn't starve, they had to come up with an island menu...

Unfortunately, there was a hurricane coming towards the island so they found out all about hurricanes...

Luckily, they were able to find a Morse Code messenger, so they sent out a message for help...

Will the message get through? Will they be rescued?

Amazing authors

In Year 6, we do lots of fantastic writing and the Y6 teachers are really missing being able to read all of the children's brilliant stories so we have loved receiving some of the children's writing that they have been doing recently. We thought it would be good to share some of it...

This diary entry was written to help spot determiners. Can you spot them? 

Dear diary,

Today I woke up at 10:00 (I know it’s very late). I dragged myself out of my bed and went to the bathroom. After I refreshingly washed my face and brushed my teeth, I began to head downstairs. Once I had a quick breakfast I went straight onto my dad’s laptop and began studying. I then went on YouTube for a bit and when I got bored of that, I read some of my e-books. I secretly went on Amazon to look for some presents for my brother as it was his birthday soon. My mother called me for lunch and we enjoyed our meal with a conversation -I don’t remember what it was about. After that, everyone just lounged about floating in and out of rooms without a particular reason. Then, time raced ahead of us and it was time to go to bed. Me and my brother had a quick snack and went upstairs. I read for a bit but sleepiness took over I turned off my light and closed my eyes, ready to enter my dreams.

Haunted Forest by Lewis

I woke up, sweat dripping down my face. “Hey, hey there, Jamie, you’ve been asleep for ages!” said a familiar voice from across the room.

“Where am I? What’s happening?” I asked wearily.

“I’ve been trying to find out where we are for ages but the door is locked and the windows are all boarded up.” Brian said visible at last.

“Just find the key, I need breakfast!”

“Why so ratty?”

I stumbled down the stairs of this mysterious house I’d never been to before.

“Cupboard, cupboard, cupboard, where is it? Ah there we are, they have wheatabix as well.” I said picking up the box. “ this has no wheatabix in it” I reached inside the box and pulled out a small copper yale key that fit inside of the keyhole that was stuck inside of the door. I put it in the lock; it opened “Ha!”

I creeped out of the door, it was shut by Brian. I looked back, the house was gone and I was in the Legendary Haunted Forest. No one had ever gotten out of it.

A triple agent.

This book is not like others this book is about my life. It is about my life as a British spy serving my country for world war 2. I was born on the 10 January 1911. I was born in a town in Britain called York. I grew up with my mother, farther and brother. We were not rich but we coped. When I was 3 when world war 1 stated. I watched as my father went off to the war my mother was crying and so was my brother I was so confused. I thought that father was just going of to the shops or work but I had a very wrong idea.


Many years passed but eventually world war 1 ended. When my mother saw my father, she ran at him and gave him a huge hug and my brother and me had joined. Our family were together once more. We thought that nothing could separate us again. But we were ever so wrong.


Me and my brother, had grown up and we were so close. We had become best friends over the years. My farther had had a weak arm since world war 1 so he had to have help some times but we were a happy family. However, in Germany things were not so good they had to give up land and pay huge fines from world war 1. So, they wanted to have a chancellor and he was Adolf Hitler. He was not a good choice. He thought that German people were better than other countries people.


Britain had been watching Hitler for many years and we did not agree with what he was doing. Especially when he invaded Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland. So, we stated that if he did not retreat from Poland then we would declare war on Germany. He did not. War was declared.


A member of my family had to go since my father was hurt my brother had to go but he was very smart so instead of fighting he offered to be a spy. Which was much more dangerous but he was brave and was not afraid. Neither was I. so in 1939 I offered to become a spy as well as my brother. They first of all refused to have me until 1940 when Germany, Italy and Japan created the Axis alliance.


 I went to Germany as a young girl who wanted to become a German spy. That is right I was a British spy acting like a German spy. they accepted me to be a ‘German spy’. I had tricked them. I got information from the German and gave it to the British and gave false information to the German. My brother was acting as a Nazi soldier. He would go to concentration camps and free people which was ever so dangerous because if he was caught he would lose his life.


I continued to give information to the British and feed false information to the Germans. I was deep under cover so deep that only my brother, instructor and Winston church hill knew who I really was. When D-day happened, the Germans were extra careful with the people who got told the top-secret information. I had to find fun ways of getting it. My brother had been sold out so he had to leave but he had been prepared so he safely left.


One day I was getting information when I got a code which said someone had sold me out I needed to get out I quickly hid in my wardrobe just in time. Nazi soldiers had come bursting in. I had grabbed all of the important work and decoding I had. I heard the last of the Nazi soldiers go out. I had to think of a plan to get out of Germany and fast.


Suddenly it hit me I was staying in a place where a broken-down plane had hit if I got it back in working shape I could use it to escape. It took time. I finished it a week later. I had hidden in the plane in day and worked on it in the cover of night. On October 20th 1944 I got in the plane with 2 escaped Jews and flew we had a clean start then 2 planes came up next to me. I was caught but I was not going peacefully. I flew higher, me and the Jews were fine since this was a crashed British plane it was very high tech. We flew higher and then we were 100 meter or so from the German boarder but 2 more planes came. I dove. I flew down and forwards. I was a skilled pilot so I was quicker than the others and before I knew it I was out of Germany. We were headed straight for Britain.


We flew over the sea it was beautiful, we gained height so no boats saw us. Both of the Jews were young. They looked 11 or 12. Sister and brother it made me think of my brother and me how we had been so close when we were young. It also made me realise that I missed my family terribly. But I would see them soon.


We got to Britain in a few hours. I was home. We had a bumpy landing but a landing no less. I saw my mother, father and brother I ran at them I gave them a huge hug. We all cried. Our family were together again When I got home I started to work for the last few months as a decoder or any work which I could do to help. In may 1945 the Germans surrendered. The 8th of may was declared VE-day.


I loved being a spy. The dangerous missions, the almost getting killed but mostly saving people’s lives. I will never forget my experience being a spy. and I really hope that people hear my story and think to themselves. Wow, women really are more powerful than I think.

Steve and Margret

It was the first of January 3030 and Margret and Steve had just woke up in there house under the nuclear power station. The pair were amazing friends and lived together on planet BANG. Margret looked odd on the outside but so did her pall so they were never judged. Steve was a water bottle with legs and arms. His personality was bright, loving and crazy. On the other hand Margret was the exact opposite: her characteristics go like this; she is shy and likes to keep to herself; she is a bit bitter and likes to get her own way and she is calm and gentle. Her body is a human but her head is a bear. She was made fun of because of this and that is why she is so put away and shy.

As Steve started to say good morning Margret got a red alert from her mind cap- this alert was the highest of the high! She was shocked by the news. She interrupted Steve in a shocked and panicked voice,” the power station is down and we need to fix it now before it blows up.” Steve who was baffled and grabbed his tool bag and they set off upstairs. Because of the severity of the situation the two engineers roped in all the staff from IKEA.

It turns out that it was a quick fix and her mind cap get it wrong. But there was a norther problem…

There toboggan slide was broken so they had to take the spooky random ladder. On the way down Steve fell to his death. Marget was nether the same.

The adventures of the tree Tee.

Tee made his way to the haunted forest. He wasn’t scared at all. He belonged to this forest. The problem was, he was trying to get people to believe that he was a member of this forest. Tee carried on down the track to his home. That’s why he said he belonged to the forest of ghosts. He said there were no ghosts but no one believed him. He was lonely for believing in trees. They didn’t understand that trees helped us live. No one sat at his table, even teaches to a disgrace to him( which was against the rules). He was lonely, sad and friendless. Sadly he really wanted a friend too talk to. He went to bed hoping for this day to be over like any other day. Not that he knew but tomorrow would be a change.

As he woke up, he went downstairs he saw on the news that terrorists were attacking his town. It was like a knife had gone through him. He dropped his toast onto the floor and his dog(Max). The news was shocking for him he loved  his town there was a doughnut shop, an IKEA , a Tesco and a nature park. The nature park was his favourite out of them all. He didn’t like it at all, so he switched it of. He slightly glad he lived in the woods but he was worried for his school mates. He decided to get into his super tree camouflage. He got a few twigs with bright neon leafs and started out too face the terrorists once and for all.

When he got his destination, he started to use his super tree stealth to the max. Then he realized they were taking the IKEA meatballs. He was horrified about what he saw. He focused on the power of the trees and IKEA’s meatballs. The tree god replied and gave him the power to obliterate any evil life force but too make new lifes of plants, trees, and people. The town was safe. 

When my world fell apart ( literally )

Nothing was the same the day the first piece of the world fell off.

Dorothy is a ghost. Not like those silly ghosts you see at Halloween. She had pale white skin and jet-black hair, her lips were blood red. She didn’t look a mess, like what we think ghosts do. She had perfect hair, amazing skin and she didn’t wear those ghoulish rags. She wore a tie-dye t-shirt and ripped jeans with a rainbow ribbon for a belt.

She got turned into a ghost when the nuclear power plant went off. At first she didn’t know what to do. She couldn’t see her friends or ever see her parents. It was all in the newspaper and everyone was looking for her but they couldn’t see her expect on Halloween. But she didn’t really like that holiday, all it is is a bunch of drunk teenagers daring each other to go into the woods. Ever since she disappeared, everyone was calling it the haunted forest. They were rumours that there were ghosts in it, which is true, most people thought it was a bunch of silly supertions and that she had just fell off a cliff.

Two weeks before the first piece of the world fell off Dorothy was sitting on top of the volcano that spurted maple syrup and squashies. The volcano was made out of brown rock which looked a lot like chocolate. She didn’t care that there was a bear that came and ate all the maple syrup. She didn’t feel like rolling down the volcano like she used to do. She didn’t feel right it was her birthday and funny enough she was born on Halloween. Ten years ago she got turned into a ghost and now she was sixteen she couldn’t help feeling that she was missing out on her whole life.

Suddenly there was a huge rumble and a tremor split the volcano in half. There was maple syrup everywhere. The hot, gooey syrup was heading for ikea. It went down in a hot mess. She could hear the screams of people. There were Margret and Steve, who she could hear most of all, looking like they were using an ikea meatball tray to get out of there. She was scared what was causing this. ‘you idiot Dorothy’ she thought to herself, ‘it was just an earthquake. That spilt a volcano in half and boiled ikea to the ground’.

She slumped down the mountain and headed back to the haunted forest. All the trees seemed to be judging her because she didn’t save thousands of people. Well she couldn’t even touch those people. All she could have done was watch.

Every day afterwards was the same an earthquake would tear though the ground and destroy other buildings. All Dorothy would do was put her silky, white hands over her head and cry and cry. Then it was the time for that day, the day a piece of the world fell off.

Dorothy was running to the city praying that her parents hadn’t died. All this rubble wasn’t a very good sign and she was dreading the fact that they could have died. Then the first earthquake came. It tore through the ground and ripped up tar mack and buildings. That wasn’t even the worst one. All of them took up this one space ripping it from the core. It drifted out into space and Dorothy watched in horror as the earthquakes tore into the core and the earth exploded into tiny pieces.

How about a few recipes to inspire you with your cooking...


For the base

300g strong bread flour

1 tsp instant yeast  (from a sachet or a tub)

1 tsp salt

1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for drizzling

For the tomato sauce

100ml passata

handful fresh basil  or 1 tsp dried

1 garlic clove, crushed

For the topping

125g ball mozzarella, sliced

handful grated or shaved parmesan

 (from a sachet or a tub)

handful cherry tomatoes, halved

To finish

handful basil  leaves (optional)


Make the base: Put the flour into a large bowl, then stir in the yeast and salt. Make a well, pour in 200ml warm water and the olive oil and bring together with a wooden spoon until you have a soft, fairly wet dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 mins until smooth. Cover with a tea towel and set aside. You can leave the dough to rise if you like, but it’s not essential for a thin crust.


Make the sauce: Mix the passata, basil and crushed garlic together, then season to taste. Leave to stand at room temperature while you get on with shaping the base.


Roll out the dough: If you’ve let the dough rise, give it a quick knead, then split into two balls. On a floured surface, roll out the dough into large rounds, about 25cm across, using a rolling pin. The dough needs to be very thin as it will rise in the oven. Lift the rounds onto two floured baking sheets.


Top and bake: Heat oven to 240C/fan 220C /gas 8. Put another baking sheet or an upturned baking tray in the oven on the top shelf. Smooth sauce over bases with the back of a spoon. Scatter with cheese and tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil and season. Put one pizza, still on its baking sheet, on top of the preheated sheet or tray. Bake for 8-10 mins until crisp. Serve with a little more olive oil, and basil leaves if using. Repeat step for remaining pizza.

Home Learning WB 18-5-20

Dear Year 6, 

We hope that you are all well and keeping busy. We've been impressed with all the work that we have seen and heard about. Please find attached your home learning suggestions for this week - remember to use them in a way that works for you and your family. It is a good idea for you to take responsibility for your learning, as this will help you prepare for secondary school. You can use the tick sheet to organise your timetable and keep track of what you have completed. You can also use this time you have at home to focus on an area or topic that you have a particular interest in.  

Again this week there are a few extras. Firstly, we just wanted to remind you about the whole school music project, which involves some sewing to decorate our piano cover. Take a photo of your design and email it to us. Keep the original safe at home for now.  Also, Modeshift Stars (who come into school to work with us on sustainable travel) are inviting children and young people from across South Yorkshire to create a story, poem, poster, photo or comic strip about the positive changes in our lives (eg, staying healthy and active together, reduction in air pollution, roads have less cars etc) during this time and how we can inspire our families to continue these activities as part of our daily lives when schools and workplaces re-open.  The best/most interesting/most quirky entries will be published in a book to inspire others to Stay Safe and Get Active now, and in the future. They are therefore inviting children to inspire others to Stay Safe and Get Active now, and in the future by doing one of 5 things: 
  • Writing a poem
  • Writing a creative story,
  • Creating a poster or
  • Comic strip
  • Take a photo

Home Learning Tasks WB 11-5-20

Dear Year 6, 

We hope that you are all well and keeping busy (maybe planning a VE Day celebration - do send us a photo if you have done anything special). Due to the bank holiday, we are sending next week's work a little early. Please find your home learning suggestions for this week in your emails. We have really enjoyed seeing and hearing about what you have been up to. Keep up the fantastic work. 

This week there are a few extras. Firstly, there is a whole school music project which involves some sewing to decorate our piano cover. Also, as it should have been SATs week, we thought that instead of you getting tested on what you have learnt, you might like to test your teachers.
