Friday 6th November

Welcome back everyone in Y5! We are looking forward to busy and exciting half term.

This week in Y5NL, we have been working on our class charter in our RRS sessions. Before half term, we worked in groups to choose the most important articles (from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child). We put these into a diamond 9 shape, with the ones we thought were the most important at the top. Then we had a big class discussion to decide on the articles for our charter. After that, we thought of the actions we need to take to make sure that these rights are met (for the children and for the adults at school).

This week we have been making designs for our charter. We all had lots of different ideas so in the end we had a vote. The results were very close so Mrs Loosley had the idea to combine the ideas. We are going to have a rainbow background and each person in the class has made their own character with their face on it. We will be putting it all together next week so wait for a photo!

Y5EC have also been working on our class charter this week. We had lots of discussion about which articles from the UNCRC were most important and relevant to our lives in school. We then decided on some Rights Respecting actions that all the children and adults working in our class were going to try and do this year. This should make our class a happy place to be!

The articles we chose are:

Article 24 - Every child has a right to the best possible health through good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment. (We thought this one was particularly relevant at the moment!)

Article 28 - Every child has the right to an education. Discipline in schools must respect children's dignity and their rights.

Article 19 - All children must be protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect and bad treatment.

Article 16- Every child has a right to privacy. The law should protect children's private, family and home life.

We discussed how these articles were relevant to school, and what we could do to make sure everyone was having these rights met and respected.

Afterwards, we came up with some ideas for themes, had a vote, and set to work creating the images to go onto our charter. What do you think of the final result?
