Science week Day 1 and 2

We have had some incredible experiences over the first 2 days of Science Week 2019 in year 5. We had inspirational talks from several parents who are working in various different scientific fields. Professor Williamson showed us how he would extract the DNA from an egg and we looked at what all the different parts of an egg were. Jane Saxton explained what her work as an embryologist entails. We also spent time in our woods exploring the outside world (and enjoying a cup of hot chocolate and a toasted marshmallow!). Linking in with previous science work that we have done on the properties of air, we made a car that was powered by a balloon. To learn about density, we made lava lamps out of water, vegetable oil, alka seltzer and food colouring. The most interesting session - but some would say disgusting- was when we looked at different types of poo! We had to work out why animals had such different types of poo and what this tells us about them. This session finished with us watching a very funny short film about different animals pooing. In just two days we have already gained so much new scientific knowledge and developed our scientific investigation skills.
