Science Xmas Lecture

Last Friday all of year 5 walked down to Sheffield University to attend their annual Xmas Lecture for Children. The Octagon Centre was jam packed with very excited (and very noisy!) primary school children.

The inspirational Prof Tim Birkhead presented an interactive talk entitled 'The Life of Birds'. Tim is a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 2017 was awarded UK Bioscience Teacher of the Year by the UK Society of Biology, in honour of his inspirational teaching and longstanding passion for research in the field.  You may have seen him on the recent David Attenborough programme ‘The Wonder of Eggs’. The event involved exciting demonstrations, experiments, incredible images and audience participation. We saw birds flying across the stage and above our heads! The lecture finished with a Golden Eagle being introduced to the audience.  The aim of this event is to inspire the children of Sheffield by introducing them to scientific research, showing them how fascinating life on earth is and demonstrating how much fun learning can be. The university also hope to demystify the University and provide the children with learning aspirations. Hopefully they will have inspired many of our children to aspire to attending university in the future.
